Magnesium – A Natural Sleep Aid

When my children were babies, I got into the habit of a bedtime routine for them, to help them learn when and how to get to sleep. But it took me several years after that to realise that I needed to treat myself too, and have a bedtime routine to help me sleep well.

Magnesium, a natural sleep aid.

It wasn’t an overnight decision, more something that developed gradually, especially once we started stocking Blants Magnesium Oil and I realised how quick and easy a sleep-supporting routine could be.

Magnesium for improving sleep.

My routine works for me, for now. Maybe it will be altered as life changes, and it’s definitely not strict in terms of getting to bed at the exact same time each night, but I do find that the more specifically I follow it, the more my body knows what’s expected of it, and the more effective it is.

So, my pre-bedtime actions, regularly repeated in the same manner, and at about the same time each night, are:

9pm – Relax in a warm Epsom salt bath*. Usually I soak for about 15 minutes but if I get engrossed in a good book it can sometimes be until the water’s turned cold!

Feeling physically and mentally stress-free after my bath, I finish up the end of day tasks, you know the ones – putting the animals out, locking the doors, turning out the lights… then I can climb into bed feeling relaxed.

It’s time for even more relaxing magnesium!  I spray magnesium oil over the soles of my feet and massage it in.  I also pop on some bed socks because, even in summer, I relax quicker into a restful state when I’ve got cosy feet!

By now it’s about 10pm – I take time to write in my gratitude journal and go over my list of jobs for the next day, so my mind is not cluttered with thoughts interrupting my sleep.

The magnesium and sulphates from my bath, topped up with the mag oil leave me feeling chilled but sometimes I’ll listen to a meditation track and focus on some relaxed deep breathing too. By 10.30 my body-clock says ‘lights out’ and off I go to deep sleep land.

If you have any bedtime routine tips that help you, please share them with us on our Facebook page. And if you don’t have any form of routine yet, why not make a start by getting a bottle of our concentrated magnesium oil and take 10 seconds each night, once you’re in bed, to massage some into the soles of your feet. Magnesium can play a part in helping you achieve quality, restful sleep. Our 250ml bottle is only $25 and lasts 3-4 months of daily use.

* Epsom salt contains magnesium. You can also use our Magnesium Chloride Flakes. A magnesium bath before bedtime helps to relax muscles and mind, ready to ease into sleep, and it’s thought that the lowering of body temperature after your bath is a sign to your body that it’s time to sleep.
